Listed below are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions by Apprentices and Trainees regarding Australian Apprenticeships and Traineeships.
What wages do I get paid?
Wages vary depending on the type of industry you are working in and the qualification you are undertaking.
To find out what wages and employment conditions apply to you contact Wageline on 1300 363 264 or visit: www.commerce.wa.gov.au/wageline
What is the difference between an apprenticeship and traineeship?
A traineeship is usually completed in about 12 months whereas an apprenticeship commonly is between two and fours years long depending on the occupation.
Both provide you with an opportunity to 'earn while you learn' and achieve a nationally recognised qualification at the completion of your training.
Who will do the training?
A Registered Training Organisation (RTO) will be nominated at the time of sign up to complete the training. Your employer will help you decide who to nominate, and AMA Apprenticeship and Traineeship Services can provide advice to help you make the right choice.
How will the training be provided?
This will depend on the qualification being undertaken.
In most circumstances Trainees are provided with workbooks to complete at their own pace. It is expected that the trainee will use normal occupational tasks as evidence of their competency in the traineeship. They will receive regular visits from the RTO to undertake assessment and provide feedback.
Apprentices will be expected to attend either block or day release at a Training Centre or TAFE college. This means that, on average, an Apprentice will spend 4 days per week at work, and 1 day per week in formal training.
How do I find work as an apprentice or trainee?
AMA Apprenticeship and Traineeship Services do not directly recruit apprentices or trainees for employers. Finding an apprenticeship or traineeship is the same as looking for any type of work. You can try looking in the newspapers and also ringing or visiting local businesses with your resume. Apprenticentre operate a jobs board for employers to advertise vacancies for apprenticeship or traineeship positions. Group Training organisations are also a good option. Please see our Useful Contacts page for more information.
