Traineeships
Traineeships in Western Australia vary in duration from 6 months to 48 months full time. Traineeships can also be undertaken on a part-time basis with a minimum requirement of 20 hours per week paid employment (different arrangements apply for school-based traineeships and some special projects). Generally, an existing worker can only take up a traineeship in the first 3 months of their full-time employment, or first 12 months of their part-time or casual employment. Different arrangements apply to some existing workers aged up to 24 years of age.
The criteria to take up a traineeship include:
Australian Citizenship, Permanent Residency, or a New Zealand passport holder who has been resident in Australia for at least 6 months
Have reached secondary school leaving age, or have written approval from the Department of Education and Training to take up the traineeship and are at least 15 years old
Be employed for at least 20 hours each week
Be a new worker or, if returning to work for a previous employer, have had a break in employment of at least 6 months
Not hold a qualification at the same or higher level that is related to the traineeship
