Traineeships in Western Australia vary in duration from 6 months to 48 months full time. Traineeships can also be undertaken on a part-time basis with a minimum requirement of 20 hours per week paid employment (different arrangements apply for school-based traineeships and some special projects). Generally, an existing worker can only take up a traineeship in the first 3 months of their full-time employment, or first 12 months of their part-time or casual employment. Different arrangements apply to some existing workers.

The criteria to take up a traineeship include:
  • Australian Citizenship, Permanent Residency, or a New Zealand passport holder who has been resident in Australia for at least 6 months
  • Have reached secondary school leaving age, or have written approval from the Department of Education and Training to take up the traineeship and are at least 15 years old
  • Be employed for at least 20 hours each week
  • Be a new worker or, if returning to work for a previous employer, have had a break in employment of at least 6 months
  • Not hold a qualification at the same or higher level that is related to the traineeship
