What is an Australian Apprenticeship?

Australian Apprenticeships combine training and employment and can lead to the completion of a nationally recognised qualification. In WA, the term Australian Apprenticeships incorporate the more traditional apprenticeships and also traineeship options.

Are there different types of Australian Apprenticeships?

Australian Apprenticeships in Western Australia, of between two and four years duration are available full-time, part-time or whilst still at school depending on the industry involved.

Although apprenticeships are generally taken up by young people, there is no upper age limit and mature aged people are encouraged to consider Australian Apprenticeship pathways.

Are there restrictions on who can become an Australian Apprentice?

While Australian Apprenticeships are open to a wide range of people from different backgrounds there are some basic requirements.

Criteria to take up an Australian Apprenticeship include:

• Australian Citizenship, Permanent Residency, or a New Zealand passport holder who has been resident in Australia for at least 6 months
• Have reached secondary school leaving age, or have written approval from the Department of Education and Training to take up the Australian Apprenticeship and are at least 15 years old
• It is not possible for an employer to take up an apprenticeship in their own business
